Georgia On My Mind

Mike and I just got to Columbus, Georgia this past Tuesday.  We left Orland Park early Monday morning, Mike and Jesse the cat in one car and me and my Dad in the other!  For those of you who might feel bad that Mike had to drive alone with the cat, you should know that this was his idea as a way to preserve space in the rest of the car.  Also, Jesse James was ALMOST perfect for the entire 14 hour ride, he barely made any noise!!

Monday night we stopped in Nashville and went on a little bar crawl as many of you might know already due to the several facebook check-ins!! I loved Nashville and wish we could've stayed longer.  Definitely a place we will visit again!  The amount of live country music everywhere was awesome and even Mike seemed to enjoy it!  Nashville is very similar to Austin with all the live music, but I would say Nashville is more country while Austin is more bluesy.

Tuesday we hit the road again and dropped my dad at the airport in Birmingham, AL since Southwest doesn't do service to Atlanta yet.  It was really great of my dad to drive all that way, but at least he got to have a fun night in Nashville with us! We finally arrived in Columbus around 5:00pm (4:00pm central).  I hate the time difference.  All of our TV shows are an hour later than normal! I digress. Anyway, we got there right in the middle of evening rush hour and I had no clue where I was going. Mike had to weigh his car while it was full of stuff so that we get reimbursed for gas, and I was heading to our apartment.  Our apartment complex is brand new so it pretty much doesn't show up on any GPS systems, annoying.  We checked in to our apartment, ordered a pizza, and went to bed on our nice air mattress.

Wednesday morning we woke up early.  Mike had to head in to Ft. Benning to get all signed in and fill out some paperwork.  I had to get prepared for the movers to come with all of our stuff!  The movers got here around 10:30am and were here until probably 2:30.  There were only two movers, when we got all packed up in Texas there were five!  As the movers brought up furniture and boxes I had to check off the number of the box/item.  I was also trying to unpack some of the boxes so that the movers could take the empty ones and we didn't have to get rid of them ourselves.  Well, we ended up still having about 15 boxes to unpack and get rid of once the movers left.

I should mention the weather here.  When we first got here it was pretty cold, but after the first two days it warmed up and has been ab out 65-70 degrees everyday.  Pretty nice, but everyone says it will get colder again.

Thursday I headed in to Fort Benning with Mike to get my military ID and to get signed up with TriCare.  We weren't sure if it was going to work since I don't have my social security card, I turned in my old one and am still waiting on the new one with my new name on it.  We read on a sheet from Ft. Hood that a W2 could be used if you didn't have a SSC, so we had my Dad scan one of my old W2's and email it.  Dad is just doing all kinds of favors for us!  The lady seemed taken aback by the W2 and didn't think that would be acceptable.  She went and checked and thankfully it was! She said we were the first people she's ever had use a W2.   Even though this whole process was kind of a scavenger hunt and we had to go to several different buildings, it went pretty smoothly.  Ft. Benning is quite a bit prettier than Ft. Hood too, TONS of trees everywhere.

For some reason we have been very lazy with the unpacking and it has been going very slowly.  We got here Tuesday, all our stuff came Wednesday, today is Sunday and we both FINALLY unpacked all of our clothes!  I did a ton of work unpacking today though, and Mike did a little work ;-)  It's safe to say that both of our bathrooms and our kitchen are the only completed rooms.  I will post some pics of these.  The rest of the apartment will be photographed when it's ready!

This is a flip calendar we got at PreCana that offers tips for marriage. I keep it in our bathroom. This was the tip today:

Mike doing dishes?!?!? Nah, probably just getting some water.

More pics to come when we get the rest of the rooms finished! Yesterday we picked out a kitchen table at Ashley Furniture which will be delivered next weekend.  I'm so excited we'll have a table to eat dinner on so we don't have to eat at the coffee table anymore!

Love,
Christine
